Tiny Blue-Winged Olive

A

Plauditus and Acentrella spp. (formerly Pseudocloeon) and other small Baetidae

Also called Pseudocloeon, Pseudo, Tiny BWO, Little Medium Olive.

The tiny summer and fall olives that sit alongside the standard Baetis and are easy to mistake for midges until you look closely. On the Muskegon they emerge and fall as spinners in the evening from midsummer through November, and trout keying on them demand #24-26 flies on 7X. Fish a sparse CDC emerger or a no-hackle in the film, and switch to a tiny rusty or olive spinner as the light goes. On the northern rivers they matter most from late May through August.
