Rivers / Northeast Lower Peninsula
Au Sable River, North Branch
A flies-only dry-fly fishery with brook, brown and rainbow trout, running from Sheep Ranch to the main stream. It shares the Au Sable hatch sequence but, in RiverReports' phrase, has "its own timing and vagaries." DNR diet work on this branch (1962-1971) found trout diets 70-80 percent fish, the scientific root of Michigan's streamer culture.
Fish by month
- Brook trout
Small brook trout were 30-61 percent of brown trout diet in the DNR study, which implies an abundant population.

Hatching now
Eggs in the drift
Right now the drift carries brown trout and brook trout eggs, with brown trout and brook trout at peak. Spawning follows water temperature rather than the hatch offset, so these months do not shift.
